The Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) on Thursday urged the federal government to regulate the activities of multiple agencies at the nation’s ports.

The stakeholders advised authorities to streamline the agencies, lamenting that their presence makes the ports unattractive.

ANCLA President, Tony Nwabunike, spoke to journalists on Thursday.

He condemned the incursion of foreign customs brokerage agents into clearing and forwarding business, and charged the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to take action.

Nwabunike said safety and security of the maritime industry must be upheld.

“The issues of arbitrary levies and charges must stop to make Nigeria ports attractive in the sub-region”, NAN quoted him as saying.

Nwabunike reminded the government of compensation of two per cent of annual customs duty for licenced agents.

He called for borderless trade in Africa through the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA)

The agents’ leader regretted that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Trade Liberalisation Scheme had not been effectively used by Nigerians.
