Carabao Cup: EFL announces new rules ahead of Man United vs Man City, Tottenham vs Brentford

The English Football League, EFL, has effected some changes ahead of Manchester United’s clash with rivals, Manchester City, in one of the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

The new rule allows the semi-final teams to make five substitutes during the games rather than three.

Teams have made only 3 changes up until this stage of the competition and even in the Premier League.

A statement by the EFL confirmed the alteration amid an increasingly hectic fixture list.

Tottenham will play Brentford on Tuesday looking to book their place in the final while United will battle City on Wednesday.

The statement read: “The EFL has agreed to increase the number of substitutes permitted to be used in this season’s Carabao Cup Semi-Finals and Final.

“Following consultation with the four clubs remaining in the competition, nine substitutes can now be named in the matchday squad, with five permitted to take to the pitch during the 90 minutes and extra time if applicable.

“Each team is only permitted a maximum of three opportunities (excluding half time, full time and half time of extra time) to make substitutions during normal time.

“However, if a tie goes to extra time, an additional opportunity to use a substitute(s) will also be permitted but only from the five substitutes allowed.

“Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and a more congested fixture schedule, the Carabao Cup Semi-Finals will be single-legged and go to extra time and penalties if required.”

Pep Guardiola’s Man City eliminated Man United at this stage of the competition last season and are chasing a fourth consecutive win in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side defeated Everton 2-0 to reach this season’s semifinal with Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial scoring for the Red Devils at Goodison Park.

Tottenham Hotspur made it to the semi-finals by defeating Stoke City 3-1 thus setting up a clash with Brentford while City tackles United.
